Pashupathinath Cremation

The Bagmati River is the preferred place for cremating bodies in Kathmandu. Kathy was not pleased with all the tourists taking pictures, but I didn't resist. I had never seen someone getting cremated.. Please forgive my offense...

I noticed that the person lighting the funeral pyre appeared to be a young man. It is the duty of the oldest son to cremate his father.

This picture reminded me that one night, coming home from a nightclub around midnight, our headlights caught a glimpse of 6 men running beside the road, in the dark, carrying something in a white sheet on their shoulders.

I was told it was a body. Someone had died and the body needed to be cremated within 24 hours. The men were carrying the body to the river and would be running until they got the body safely to its destination.
