Kao's Sister
This is the sister that had to take care of Kao when their m
other became too ill to care for him. She was 8 years
old at the time.
Unable to eat solid food, Kao soon became weak.
His sister told his mother that he would die if they
didn't find someone to care for him. They found a Mien
family willing to take Kao as their own son.
Soon after, Kao and his Mien family had to leave Laos
at the end of the Vietnam war, fearing retribution
Many years later, Kao's sister wanted to find out what
had happened to her brother. Although she knew Kao
had escaped to Thailand and then to the United States,
she didn't know where he was or how to contact him.
She spent 7 years trying to find Kao in the U.S.,
sending letters to people she knew in the states, asking
if they knew where he was.
She finally found him, only to loose touch when they
both moved and lost each other's address.
She continued her search for 4 more years when she
found Kao for the second time. She implored him to
come to Laos to visit.
She was very happy and relieved to see how healthy and
happy Kao was after having given him up for adoption
some 38 years earlier. Kao reassured her that she had
done the right thing.
