Sacred Tree

A view down to the village resting plaza, near the primary school, the post office, and health clinic. The large tree is a Pipal, or "sacred fig" tree, a species of banyan fig native to Nepal.

The Pipal is considered sacred by Hindus and Buddhists. Siddhartha Gautama is said to have been sitting underneath a Pipal tree when he was enlightened.

Planting pipal trees is considered very meritorious work.
