Palace Walkway
I like the wood placement in the brick wall. I asked
Kathy if Kathmandu ever had earthquakes. She said
they have had many major quakes. I asked why brick
was used, since it is notoriously poor for withstanding
earthquakes. She pointed out that the palace had
withstood the earthquakes without much damage.
Supposedly, the somewhat random placement of wood
doors and windows throughout the building somehow
keeps the building from reaching any harmonic with the
earthquake, thereby keeping the shaking of the building
to a minimum. I'm not sure I understand this, or believe
it, but new houses in the valley are purposely built to
match the non-symmetric patterns of the buildings that
have been around for centuries. I hope it works!
