This is Wat's wife (left) and his wife's sister (right).
Wat's wife was very kind in letting me stay in her
household during my stay in Ayutthaya.
And her sister is the one who took the time to help me
hear and say the 5 tones used in Thai. She taught me
like she taught 5-year-olds, which was just right for my
knowledge of tonal languages!
Lesson 1:
The 5 tones in Thai are high, middle, low,
rising, and falling. This means that the meaning of the
word will depend on its tone. For example, click here
to hear the word "mai" said with the 5 tones, meaning "wood" (high),
(middle) (this word doesn't exist), "not" (falling), "silk" (rising), and "new" (low).
Thank you to both of these wonderful people!
