She seemed very smart, and would make a good wife, but was still unmarried with no desire to marry. She wanted to start a new business and make money on her own.

New opportunities for women and lowering demand for high birthrates, as in many developing countries, were redefining the roles of men and women in families and marriage. (All subject to my misunderstanding, of course...)
