Knock-Knock
We got on the bus, well fed and relaxed, only to find
that there were more people with tickets than there were
seats! I was behind Jordan and Kao, who found seats in
the back of the bus. For a moment, I thought I was
going to have to ride another who-knows-when bus!
But then a woman, a friend of the bus driver, offered her
seat to me. I hesitated, but she sat on the engine case
beside the driver, and seemed to be happy to be there.
I sat down, looking back at the full bus, and gave Kao
and Jordan a nervous smile and thumbs-up.
Later, it turned out, she worked for the bus company
and was responsible for keeping track of all the bags
that were being shipped on the bus. She got off the bus
at the stop just outside town, where the last 6 gigantic
bags were added to the already top-heavy bus. I opened
the window so the fellow struggling to get the bags up
the side of the bus could have a better toe-hold.
