Three-Legged Race

I've never seen so many diverse forms of transportation. This three-wheeled jitney carries 10 people in its hold. Everybody in the jitney is going to the same place, or close by, so it fairly direct.

This particular kind of 3-wheeler, or tempo (the "white" tempo), is a new and important innovation. Up until a few years ago, tempo ran on 2-cycle oil/gas mixture engines. This was a significant source of pollution in Kathmandu valley. The white ones run on either electricity or bottled gas. The air is noticably clearer. Although I didn't ride in a tempo, Kathy warns me, "None of these vehicles are particularly good for 'lean to the left, lean to the right' cheers."
