Waiting to Go
I thought the van was full, with every seat taken, until I
realized that there were seats in the aisles, too, which
folded down to give 4 more people room to sit. Jordan
and I were in the very back when an elderly looking
lady got on the bus wearing hill country garb, bare feet,
and carrying what looked like a satellite dish about 3
feet in diameter. It took some doing, but we finally got
the dish into the back row behind her, and she sat on a
fold-down chair beside Kao.
For the next 6 hours, we were crammed together (with
occaisional stops). Kao soon remarked that the old lady
seemed to be chewing tobacco, spitting on the floor at
Kao's feet, and smearing the spit with her bare feet. I
couldn't help the smile that crept into a chortle each
time she spat, smeared the spit with her foot, and Kao
turning in disgust to complain to us.
